Hot Rod, and to a much greater extent Cheetor, were practically the opposite. He was a very idealized depiction of a young character, rather than directly analogous to any of them. He got along well with Spike as a fellow youth, but was in no way defined by his inexperience or ego. He was plucky but always following Optimus' orders and heeding the wisdom of his seniors. G1 Bumblebee was not a rebellious, impetuous youth. I don't think you know what "literal" means, nor do you really understand those characters if you think they were stand-ins for Bumblebee. I think there's probably a bigger concern about what's happening to traditional voice actors in television as big stars do more TV. Theatrical animated features have often had star power. I think we can judge better when it comes out. He's done a surprising amount of voiceover lately and even did a voice only cameo in Loki as Frog Thor. But she hasn't had a great track record as a lead.Īnd in fairness I think Hemsworth is looking to transition out of live action work because of the physical demands and because he's concerned about Alzheimer's. But I think ScarJo herself has had highs and lows to her career. Hemsworth and Johannson are bigger names. He's a comedian that, let's be honest, few people in the general population would recognize. He isn't George Clooney or Timothee Chalamet or whatever. Peele has had both successes and flops so it isn't like Key is a bankable name. I'm not really sure that Keegan Michael Key is even all that famous. (Although he only got The Joker because Tim Curry backed out and his fame as Luke Skywalker worked against him.) And while Mark Hamill started out as a Hanna Barbera voice actor, I'm sure his genre credits helped him get some roles. On the other hand, you have people like Dick Gautier and Peter Cullen who were onscreen talent first. On the one hand, I'm very frustrated by celebrities and "nepo babies" and influencers crowding every field. Hell, if you are lucky then you only get to do background voices. This is a problem with Hollywood in general, they rather hire celebs to market their movie instead of putting in the effort to market their films and just shove actual VAs to the side and not give them the respect they deserve. Remember that Lorenzo wanted Liam Neeson to voice Optimus Prime because he didn't want people who grew up with the original cartoon to watch the movie and this attitude just feels like a spit in the face against actual voice actors. I don't think this is a problem with Hasbro but more a problem with someone like Lorenzo and the rest of Hollywood. There was a time when words like "Writer's Room" gave us hope that the new movies would not suck. Transformers "One" and famous celebs to voice it… tell me you're desperate without telling me you're desperate, Hasbro. I get it, the guy is famous and brings an audience with his name attached. I'm never too keen on turning casting into a popularity contest instead of… finding a good VA.
